The gARTen @ 713 Cookman on the night of Parlor Gallery's new exhibit opening, Sept. 16, 2017.
The gARTen was born when Pat Schiavino invited Joe Harvard to curate music for Asbury Underground in spring, 2015, and Joe decided it'd be cool to do an art show in the vacant lot, to run concurrently with the musical program. So it's always exciting for us to participate in another Asbury Underground. The fall event, coming mid-way in October each year, is also close to Halloween ... and Halloween is our favorite time of year!
This year we'll be focusing on the art as much as on the music. The gARTen @ 713 Cookman has been a kind of secret until this season, but when the black lights began going up word started getting around. We expect a few hundred folks will be passing though, and we can't wait.
Our musical guests this year are all veterans of the gARTen's low volume, no-frills "stage". Geena and Keith Monacchio are both seasoned singer-songwriters, One Banned Man features a foot-drum-wielding one man band, Velveeta bring Velvet Underground songs to life live with a changing cast of seasoned players, and as usual our Sunday curator Mark Davis presents the musical performance art of Xylophone of Wrench between acts in the rear of the gARTen, below the Back Forty, and we keep the first hour open for young talent from the West Side.
